XLR8R Podcast: Rod Modell's MUTEK mix

Next week, Montreal will play host to the 12th annual MUTEK festival, which always serves as one of the year's premiere showcases for techno and forward-thinking electronic sounds. In hopes of getting everyone as much in the MUTEK spirit as we are, we decided to enlist one of the festival's heavyweights for the XLR8R podcast series. And who answered the call? Detroit techno veteran Rod Modell, best known for his work as Deepchord and as one half of Echospace with Steve Hitchell. Deepchord presents Echospace will be performing live as part of MUTEK's Nocturne 03 event—a party that also features a live set from Plastikman—and Modell has put together a preview of sorts with this exclusive mix, a session of dark and dubby techno that digs heavily into his own catalog. Highlighted by its incessant pulse, underwater synth melodies, and ever-present sense of foreboding, the podcast also serves as a primer for Modell's forthcoming Deepchord album, Hash-Bar Loops, which is slated for a July 4 release on the long-standing Soma label.

Echologist - Subterranean, Album previews

Steadfast Records
CD, Album
# SFV10CD
25 April, 2011
dub techno, ambient
(produced by Brendon Moeller)

Brendon Moeller, aka Echologist and Beat Pharmacy needs no introduction. His work with numerous fine labels such as Francois K’s Deep Space Media, Ann Aimee, Rekids, Mule, Echocord, Third Ear, Electric Deluxe, Ostgut Ton, to mention but a few, speaks for itself. Whether it be serious dancefloor bizniz, or dubbed out bass-scapes and experimentalism, his music has always possesses a quality and signature that continues to captivate a worldwide audience. This is his seventh full length album.

Subterranean is a deeply narcotic listening experience. Subtly evolving atmospheres, hypnotic sub-basslines, reverb-soaked drones and lush vibrating textures abound. All elements possess their own pulse and cadence, but stay in sync to create an otherworldly sub-aquatic experience.

The album gently ebbs and flows as exquisite modulations and articulations create a mesmerizing ambience that is at times as propulsive as it is passive. Minimal without being cliched, dubby without being played-out, repetitive without being dull. This is not music to be analyzed, it is to be felt, both physically via the bass tones and emotionally via the haunting ambience. Seemingly endless, the meditative soundscapes here are not merely indolence but rather a quest for the feverish outer limits of spacious bliss. Shoegaze techno? Perhaps.

One year later, it reveals a new album consisting on 12 reinterpretations of the original tracks by several chilean artists like De Janeiros, deMentira and Blit, as well as the venezuelan Algodón Egipcio and the mexican Sr. Amable.

Bibio - Mind Bokeh

Warp Records
4 April, 2011
# WARPCD209
CD, Album / Vynil, LP
chillwave, pop, IDM, indie

(Produced by Stephen Wilkinson)

“Bokeh is the out of focus region of a photograph. It's not a quantifiable thing, but photographers and lens manufacturers are obsessed with it. In Japanese it means “haze”, “blur”, or even “dementia”. I called the album Mind Bokeh because I'm interested in the effect of defocussing your mind, whether through meditation, chemicals or whatever – it's a state of mind quite alien to Westerners.”

Burial, Four Tet + Thom Yorke - Ego / Mirror

Text Records
Vinyl, 12", 45 RPM
16 Mar, 2011
UK garage, dubstep, indie, IDM

Six Organs of Admittance - Asleep on the Floodplain

label: Drag City
CD, Album / Vynil, LP
released: Feb 2011
folk, psychedelic, drone

SCB - Loss / Future Unknown

Aus Music
12" vinyl
# AUS1132
March 2011
deep house, minimal

(produced by Paul Rose, alias Scuba)

Tracklist:
A. Loss
B. Future Unknown

SCB is a house/techno project by Paul Rose, better known as UK bass pioneer and Hotflush Recordings owner Scuba. SCB was born in 2008 with a now-seminal rework of 'Hard Boiled' from the first Scuba album,A Mutual Antipathy, and has since developed with two full 12"s and remixes of Mount Kimbie and Phil
Kieran amongst others.
'Loss / FutureUnknown', on Will Saul's Aus Music imprint, is the first original SCB material to surface outside of Rose's own circle of labels. 'Loss', with its spacey melodies and repeating vocal slices, builds and builds into a slice of pure unadulterated dancefloor joy, very much in keeping with the musical territory occupied by Aus at the moment. On the flip side, 'Future Unknown', fills out the atmospherics with dark stabs and driving rhythms which eventually give way to an almost Scuba-esque brand of floating euphoria.
